Michael Leibowitz, M.D., Ph.D.

Distinguished Leadership Award
Since 1992, Dr. Leibowitz led the growth of the GSBS at RWJMS from 2 graduate programs with 20 students to 9 programs with 246 students. This growth made possible the award of multiple training grants from the NIH and NSF to participating faculty at UMDNJ-RWJMS and Rutgers.  He was the founding director of the Core Curriculum of what is now the Molecular Biosciences Program, a large multidisciplinary umbrella program, and served as founding director of its first two courses.  He was instrumental in negotiating the joint funding of shared graduate programs between UMDNJ and Rutgers.  While he has clearly contributed to the general success of our graduate program, Dr. Leibowitz has achieved particular national recognition for his focus on the recruitment and training of underrepresented minority scientists.  He initiated the Graduate Science Careers Program which has developed into Research In Science and Engineering (RISE) at Rutgers/UMDNJ, one of the most successful residential summer undergraduate research programs to promote diversity in the US.  Dr. Leibowitz is now working to develop the GSBS at RWJMS as a model institution for the training and mentoring of  underrepresented and underprivileged minorities as Director of Graduate Academic Diversity.
